Understanding the Canadian Study Permit

The Study Permit allows international students to:

Enroll in Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs): Authorized schools approved by provincial or territorial governments to host international students.

Work During Studies: Eligible students may work part-time during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks without a separate work permit.

Stay Duration: Remain in Canada for the duration of the study program, plus an additional 90 days to prepare for departure or apply for an extension or change of status.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a Canadian Study Permit, applicants must:

Acceptance by a DLI:

  • Obtain a letter of acceptance from a recognized Canadian educational institution.

Proof of Financial Support:

  • Demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition fees, living expenses for oneself and accompanying family members, and return transportation costs.

No Criminal Record:

  • Provide a police certificate if required, proving a clean criminal history.

Good Health:

  • Undergo a medical examination if necessary to ensure good health.

Intent to Leave Canada:

  • Convince an immigration officer of the intention to depart Canada upon permit expiration.

Application Process

Gather Necessary Documents
  • Valid passport or travel document.
  • Letter of acceptance from a DLI.
  • Proof of financial support.
  • Letter of explanation detailing study plans and understanding of responsibilities.
  • Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) if applicable.
Complete the Application
  • Apply online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) portal or via a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in your country.
Pay Applicable Fees
  • Study permit application fee: CAD $150.
  • Biometrics fee: CAD $85 (if required).
Submit Biometrics
  • Provide fingerprints and photographs at a designated collection point if instructed.
